Sonic unleashedAnother section we ended up sinking a ton of time into was mission mode, which gave each of the game's 16 competitors six character-specific missions to complete. These can be as simple as having Bowser throw a specific distance in Hammer Toss, or as incredibly difficult as requiring the player to beat Mario's rival (Sonic, of course) in a 100m dash. In the main game each of the characters are balanced pretty well, though you'll of course have small changes such as Sonic's slight speed boost or Bowser's extra power, but in Mission mode the generally even feel of each character is thrown right out the window, so with Mario's challenge you're literally trying to catch a ridiculously fast Sonic in his best event; no easy task. Mission mode is a simple addition to the package, but it adds a ton to it. After a half hour of trading the controller off between players we still couldn't beat Sonic at his own game. Needless to say, we now have noodle arms, as well as a newfound respect for the fastest character in gaming.

Get ready to feel the thundahhhh! Ski-doosh!Po is not your average panda bear. He dreams of being an ultimate martial arts master, traveling the land with his "mad skills" while keeping his people safe from harmful enemies. Sadly, it is just a dream, and he finds himself wielding a broom as he helps his father run a local Chinese restaurant. So begins Kung Fu Panda, the video game adaptation of the recently released Dreamworks computer-animated Kanda Kung Fu film. It could've been just another quickie movie tie-in, like previous Activision efforts, but this one shows some effort.

Toy Story - the gameThere's a shortage of ten-year-old reviewers here at PlanetDreamcast. When Toy Story 2 came out, we voted on who is the most childish, whiny, half-witted reviewer on the staff. Above all else, Toy Story 2 is designed for a younger audience. Right off the bat Disney includes a full screen reminder that the game is rated "E for Everyone." Don't read too much into that "Everyone" statement; Toy Story 2 is for twenty-year-olds like kingpin is for five-year-olds. That is, not at all. To capture this pre-spin the bottle crowd, Toy Story 2 features cutscenes from the actual film. The short clips are about thirty to fifty seconds, rendered in great mpeg video with very little loss of quality. In fact, the clips in Toy Story 2 are the most crisp I've yet seen on the Dreamcast. Disney certainly knows how to draw little kids around a screen: my six-year-old niece stared in wide-eyed fascination at these action and comedy sequences. Disney even included a very simple theater where all the clips can be viewed.
